The 12 Roman Gods
The Dii Consentes — the twelve canonical state-deities of Rome, named by Ennius (c. 200 BCE) and formalized by Livy in the 217 BCE lectisternium. Companion to gab44's Greek Olympians module — same twelve slots, distinct Roman jurisdiction (state, household, contract, numen) vs Greek myth-corpus.
How to read this map
Three families. Capitoline Triad & Sovereign Brothers (Jupiter, Juno, Minerva, Neptune) — the great Capitoline temple-triad plus Jupiter's brother of the sea. State-Cult (War, Hearth, Grain, Forge) (Mars, Vesta, Ceres, Vulcan) — the four pillars of the Roman state-religion: Mars the founder-father of Rome, Vesta the perpetual-flame of the city, Ceres the plebeian-Aventine grain-mother, Vulcan the forge-god of the Vulcanalia. Personal Patrons (Light, Hunt, Love, Travel) (Apollo, Diana, Venus, Mercury) — the four gods Romans addressed as individuals rather than as citizens: Apollo the imported-Greek light-prophecy patron of poetry and Augustus, Diana the Aventine-asylum protector of slaves and runaways, Venus the founding-ancestress of the Julian gens through Aeneas, Mercury the commercial-patron of the mercatores.
Source-honest. Each guide cites the canonical Latin-source corpus — Virgil's Aeneid (29-19 BCE), Ovid's Metamorphoses and Fasti (8 CE), Livy's Ab Urbe Condita (27 BCE-9 CE), Cicero's De Natura Deorum (45 BCE), Varro's reconstructed Antiquitates Rerum Divinarum (47 BCE), Plutarch's Roman Questions, Macrobius's Saturnalia — plus modern scholarship (Rüpke, Beard/North/Price, Turcan, Scheid, Scullard). And honest about: the interpretatio graeca erasure that turned most popular "Roman mythology" into Greek myth with Roman name-stickers; the 380-394 CE Theodosian end of state-paganism; the 1922-1945 fascist Roma Eterna appropriation under Mussolini; the contemporary far-right Romanitas revival (Bannon, Vance, classical-statue debates); the 21st-c. Cultus Deorum Romanorum neo-pagan recovery; and the Latin-calendar legacy embedded in every Western language (January = Janus, March = Mars, May = Maia, June = Juno, Saturday = Saturn).
Paired with sign + planet + chakra. Each god is paired with one zodiac sign, one planet, and one chakra. The 12 deities cover all 12 zodiac signs, all 10 planets, and all 7 chakras — the cross-links let you walk from Venus → Libra → Venus-planet → Heart-chakra and back.
Companion to /olympians. Where the Greek Olympians module asks "what story does this god live in?", the Roman Dii Consentes module asks "what jurisdiction does this god govern and what is the correct ritual formula (the carmen) to address them by?" — the structural complementary read.
Capitoline Triad & Sovereign Brothers · Jupiter, Juno, Minerva, Neptune
Jupiter (Iuppiter)
The Roman sky-father whose Capitoline temple was the political-religious center of the Roman world. The pattern of the *sovereign-of-the-state-by-virtue-of-the-correct-formula* — not by personality, but by jurisdiction.
Juno (Iuno)
The Roman queen-of-heaven whose temple-of-the-mint gave English the word *money*. The pattern of the *sovereign-feminine-of-the-state-household* — marriage, childbirth, women's ritual-life, the warning-voice of the geese on the Arx.
Minerva
The Roman wisdom-goddess of mind, craft, and skilled-handwork — patroness of the artisan-guilds whose Aventine temple was the workshop-headquarters of Rome. The pattern of the *practical-wisdom-applied-to-the-hand* — strategy that lives in the made object.
Neptune (Neptunus)
The Roman freshwater-springs-and-horses god whose July festival fell at the hottest-driest moment of the Mediterranean summer. The pattern of the *life-line-at-the-canicular-peak* — the springs that decide whether the village lives or dies.
State-Cult: War, Hearth, Grain, Forge · Mars, Vesta, Ceres, Vulcan
Mars (Mavors)
The Roman war-god who is also the founder-father of the Roman people — *Mars Pater* fathering Romulus and Remus on the Vestal Rhea Silvia. The pattern of *war-as-cosmic-genealogy* — every Roman was Mars-begotten.
Vesta
The Roman perpetual-hearth-flame goddess whose continuous-fire burned in the Forum for approximately 1,106 years. The pattern of the *foundational-presence-maintained-without-interruption* — the abiding-flame whose loss is the omen-of-the-state's-fall.
Ceres
The Roman grain-goddess whose Aventine temple was the plebeian state-religion headquarters. The pattern of *grain-as-law* — the gift of agriculture is the gift of civilization itself.
Vulcan (Volcanus)
The Roman destructive-fire god whose August festival was the fire-aversion-ritual at the most dangerous moment of the Mediterranean summer. The pattern of *fire-feared-not-trivialized* — the unsubduable destructive-jurisdiction that has to be propitiated, not made-cute.
Personal Patrons: Light, Hunt, Love, Travel · Apollo, Diana, Venus, Mercury
Apollo
The Greek-imported light-and-prophecy god whose name Romans kept unchanged — Augustus's personal-patron, the religious foundation of the Augustan principate. The pattern of *the patron-of-the-individual-craft* — the deity you address personally, not as a citizen.
Diana
The Roman moon-and-hunt-and-grove goddess, twin of Apollo, sovereign of the politically-marginal — the slaves, runaways, dispossessed who had legal right-of-asylum at her Aventine temple. The pattern of *the wild-feminine-and-the-marginal-protected*.
Venus
The Roman goddess of love, beauty, and desire — but distinctly Roman: the founding-ancestress of the Julian gens through Aeneas, religious foundation of every Caesarian emperor. The pattern of *desire as political-genealogical-foundational-force*, not just personal-erotic-impulse.
Mercury
The Roman god of commerce, trade, travel, communication — but distinctly Roman as the *patron-of-the-mercatores*, the merchant-guild-deity whose name is the etymological-root of every commercial term in every Romance language. The pattern of *commercial-exchange as religious-civic-jurisdiction*.
