What Mars (Mavors) actually means

Mars is the *Roman archetype of war-as-cosmic-genealogy* — the war-god who is also the *founder-father*, whose paternity of Romulus and Remus through Rhea Silvia makes every Roman *Marte genitus* (Mars-begotten) at the level of cosmic-political identity. Greek Ares is a marginal-and-mocked figure in the Greek pantheon: Hesiod and Homer treat him with contempt, his own family mocks him, he is the personification of the *worst* of war (rage, bloodlust, indiscriminate violence). Roman Mars is the *opposite*: he is the *founder-father of the city*, the cosmic-source of Roman identity, the deity at the center of the most-elaborate state-cult after Jupiter's. The distinction is *war-as-cosmic-genealogy* vs *war-as-meaningless-rage*. Romans did not despise war; they regarded it as the foundational-paternal-act from which the city was descended. The *Carmen Arvale* (the surviving 218 CE inscription of the most-archaic Roman hymn we possess, sung by the Arval Brethren priests in honor of the agricultural-Mars) shows that the original Italic Mars was *also an agricultural-deity* — the protector of the fields, the boundary-marker of the farm, the deity invoked in the *suovetaurilia* (the bull-sheep-pig sacrifice that purified farmland). The post-Greek-import made Mars more exclusively-martial; the original Italic Mars was the *boundary-and-defense-and-fertility* deity in a single integrated jurisdiction. Augustus's *Mars Ultor* cult (the Avenger) elevated the political-revenge-jurisdiction (his 42 BCE vow at Philippi that he would avenge Caesar's assassination, fulfilled with the Forum Augustum temple dedication in 2 BCE) and ended the Republican-era constraint that Mars-temples be located *outside* the pomerium — Augustus brought Mars inside the city as the patron of the new imperial-political-order.

The canonical story

In the foundational-narrative of Rome, the Vestal Virgin Rhea Silvia (daughter of the deposed king of Alba Longa) was forced into the Vestal-Virgin order by her usurping-uncle to prevent her from bearing children who could claim the throne. Mars came to her in the sacred-grove and lay with her; she conceived and bore twin sons, Romulus and Remus. The usurper ordered the twins exposed; they were placed in a basket and floated down the Tiber, washed ashore at the foot of the Palatine Hill, suckled by a she-wolf, raised by the shepherd Faustulus, grew up to recognize their birth, killed the usurper, restored Numitor (their grandfather) to the throne of Alba Longa, and then founded Rome on the Palatine — traditionally 753 BCE. Romulus killed Remus in a quarrel over the city-walls; the *Romulea* tradition fixed this fratricide as part of the foundational-narrative. The Salian priests, founded by King Numa Pompilius (715-673 BCE), danced through Rome in March carrying the twelve *ancilia* (sacred shields) — the original one of which fell from heaven during a plague-time and turned the plague back, with eleven copies made by the artisan Mamurius Veturius so no thief would know which one was the original. The Salian dance was performed at every major Mars-junction: the *Quinquatrus* on March 19, the *Tubilustrium* on March 23. The Campus Martius outside the pomerium was the legions' training-ground, the cavalry-muster-site, and the *equirria* horse-races field. After the Civil Wars, Augustus vowed in 42 BCE at the Battle of Philippi (where he and Antony defeated Caesar's assassins) that if he was victorious he would build Mars Ultor a temple in Rome — a vow he fulfilled 40 years later with the Forum Augustum temple dedication in 2 BCE. The temple housed the recovered Parthian-war-standards (the Roman legionary eagles lost in 53 BCE at Carrhae, recovered by Augustus in 20 BCE through diplomacy) as the centerpiece-relics. The temple's ruins are still visible in the Imperial Fora archaeological zone.

The lesson

The Mars-lesson is *war-as-cosmic-genealogy, not war-as-meaningless-rage*. Greek Ares is the war-god you despise; Roman Mars is the founder-father you descend from. The work is to *recognize the war-jurisdiction at the level of cosmic-paternity* — the conflicts that have made you who you are, the boundary-defenses that have built the city of your life, the *Marte genitus* fact that you are descended from the war-and-the-discipline-and-the-defense that has built your jurisdiction. The Italic Mars-jurisdiction also includes *fertility and boundary-marking* — the agricultural-Mars of the Carmen Arvale, the boundary-marker of the farm, the *suovetaurilia* sacrifice. The work is to integrate the war-jurisdiction with the fertility-jurisdiction — defense and agriculture are the same Mars-jurisdiction, not opposed; the legionary and the farmer are both *Mars-begotten*.

In love

Mars in love is the partner whose *war-jurisdiction is also the founder-paternity-jurisdiction* — whose boundary-defense, conflict-engagement, and *the things-we-fought-through-together-are-the-cosmic-source-of-our-genealogy* register is honored as foundational, not as failure. The shadow: the Mars-partner whose *war-jurisdiction has been demonized as Greek-Ares-rage* rather than honored as Roman-Mars-paternity — the conflicts have been framed as toxicity rather than as the *Marte genitus* foundation. The deeper shadow: the *Salian-priests-not-dancing* pattern — the annual-March-rite of dancing the sacred-shields through the city has not been performed in years; the original ancile (the shield that fell from heaven and turned the plague back) and the eleven copies have been put in storage, and the city has not honored its war-paternity-cult-of-foundation in a long time.

In work

Mars in work is the *founder-father-warrior-jurisdiction* — the founder whose conflicts-and-defenses are the *Marte genitus* source of the company's identity, not deviations-from-the-real-work. The shadow: the Mars-founder whose *war-jurisdiction has been demonized as toxic-leadership* — the founder's historical conflict-engagement (the painful disputes, the cofounder-splits, the legal-battles, the boundary-defenses) is being rewritten as failure rather than recognized as the *founder-paternity* that made the company. The deeper shadow: the *Salian-priests-not-dancing* pattern — the annual-March-rite of honoring the war-jurisdiction has been skipped, the *ancilia* are in storage, the foundation-myth has not been retold to new employees, and the cosmic-paternity is fading from cultural-memory. The application: Mars calls for the *Salian-dance discipline* — at least once a year, in March or another fixed festival, retell the war-paternity, dance the sacred-shields through the institution, name the conflicts that *made* the company, honor the *Marte genitus* fact.

The shadow — honest about modern misreadings

Mars has been *systematically conflated with Greek Ares* — and the conflation does Roman Mars a particularly cruel injustice because Greek Ares is genuinely a marginal-mocked-figure in his own pantheon while Roman Mars is the founder-father of the city. The result is that popular culture treats "Mars" as the despised war-rage-god (the Hesiod-Homer Ares-treatment) when the Roman tradition is precisely the opposite. The 380-394 CE Theodosian end of state-paganism ended his state-cult. The medieval European chivalric-tradition partly recovered the war-as-honored register but framed it through Christian-knightly-virtue rather than Roman *Marte-genitus* paternity. The 17th-c.-20th-c. European nationalist-militarist traditions appropriated Mars-imagery extensively — the Prussian-military Mars-iconography, the French *Champ de Mars* in Paris (the literal Latin translation of Campus Martius), the British military traditions, all working from a generic-classical-Mars-imagery. Mussolini's fascist regime made *Marte-Genitor* propaganda central to its Romanitas appropriation — fascist publications regularly invoked "Mars-the-father-of-the-Italian-people" as ideological-foundation, fascist-military pageantry recreated the *Salii* dance, the 1937 Mostra Augustea della Romanità included a major Mars-Ultor-section. The 1938 Italian Racial Laws were framed in part as "purification of the Mars-paternity of the Italian race". This appropriation has made it culturally-difficult to address Roman Mars in the 21st c. without political-implication. The contemporary American far-right Romanitas aesthetic continues the appropriation. The *Cultus Deorum Romanorum* revival has been slowly working to recover the legitimate Mars-as-founder-paternity register from the Greek-Ares-overlay and the fascist-political-overlay both — but it is the most-politically-charged Roman-deity-recovery task. The planet Mars retains his name; every Tuesday in Romance-language countries (mardi, martedì, martes, marți) is Mars-day, embedding his cult in every weekly cycle.
