The 12 Persian Yazatas
Ahura Mazda the Wise Lord, the six Amesha Spentas, and the great Yazatas of pre-Islamic Persia — the first ethical monotheism in human religious history (c. 1200-1000 BCE), foundational to Abrahamic dualism. The pantheon whose Satan / angels / messiah / end-times / soul-judgment / heaven-and-hell complex shaped Second-Temple Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and whose name has been preserved in the modern Iranian calendar (Bahman / Khordad / Tir / Mordad / Shahrivar / Mehr / Aban / Azar / Dey / Bahman / Esfand) without most-Iranians knowing.
How to read this map
Three families. Ahura Mazda & the Cosmic Triad (Ahura Mazda, Vohu Manah, Asha Vahishta, Khshathra Vairya) — the Wise Lord and the three abstract Amesha Spentas of Good-Mind / Best-Truth / Desirable-Dominion. Earth, Waters, Plants, Royal-Waters (Spenta Armaiti, Haurvatat, Ameretat, Anahita) — the three feminine Amesha Spentas of Holy-Devotion / Wholeness / Immortality plus the great water-Yazata Anahita whose cult was state-supported by Achaemenid and Sasanian Persia. Covenant, Obedience, Victory, Fire (Mithra, Sraosha, Verethragna, Atar) — the four popular Yazatas: Mithra the cosmic-covenant-guarantor, Sraosha the obedience-as-active-hearing, Verethragna the ten-incarnation warrior-victory, Atar the personified-fire-Yazata of every Fire-Temple.
Source-honest. Each guide cites the canonical Avestan-source corpus — the Gathas of Zarathustra (the 17 hymns, c. 1200-1000 BCE, oldest surviving Indo-Iranian poetic text), the Yasna (the 72-chapter priestly liturgy), the 21 Yashts (hymns to individual Yazatas, including the long Mihr-Yasht to Mithra and the long Aban-Yasht to Anahita), the Vendidad (the priestly code of purity), the Bundahishn (the Pahlavi creation-account), the Denkard (the 9th-c. Pahlavi encyclopedia) — plus modern scholarship: Mary Boyce's three-volume A History of Zoroastrianism, Albert de Jong, Almut Hintze, Prods Oktor Skjærvø's Harvard Avesta, Jenny Rose, Touraj Daryaee. And honest about: the 651 CE Arab Muslim conquest of Sasanian Persia and the four-century forced conversion; the contemporary ~25,000 Iranian Zoroastrians as a recognized-but-restricted minority; the ~60,000 Parsi diaspora demographic crisis (strict endogamy + low birthrate + dakhma-funerary-practice under vulture-collapse pressure); the Roman Mithras-cult (1st-4th c. CE Mithraea across the empire) as a substantially-distinct mystery-cult that appropriated the Iranian name; Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra (1883) as cipher for the Nietzschean superman with virtually no connection to historical Zarathustra; the Faravahar winged-disc symbol stripped from Zoroastrian-ethical-context and deployed as Persian-nationalist tattoo / Pahlavi-monarchist emblem; the persistent media-conflation with Yazidis (distinct Kurdish religion); the Bahá'í confusion; the "fire-worshipper" misreading (Herodotus 1.131 already corrected it in the 5th c. BCE); the canonical-Magi of Matthew 2:1-12 as the only direct New-Testament-borrowing of a Zoroastrian institution; Freddie Mercury (Farrokh Bulsara, Parsi Zoroastrian) whose 1991 Zoroastrian funeral went almost-unmentioned in Western media.
Paired with sign + planet + chakra. The 12 Yazatas cover all 12 zodiac signs, all 10 planets, and all 7 chakras — Ahura Mazda → Sagittarius / Jupiter / Crown, through Atar → Gemini / Uranus / Solar-Plexus. Cross-links let you walk from Mithra → Leo → Sun → Heart and back.
Foundational to Abrahamic dualism. The Satan / angels / messiah / end-times / soul-judgment / bodily-resurrection / heaven-and-hell complex of Judeo-Christian-Islamic religion is canonically downstream of the Zoroastrian Ahriman / Yazatas / Saoshyant / Chinvat-Bridge / Frashokereti eschatology — Mary Boyce and James Barr have documented the parallels extensively. The Persian-Achaemenid imperial period (550-330 BCE) of contact between Israelite-Babylonian-exile elite and Zoroastrian state-religion is the canonical-transmission window; Cyrus the Great is the only non-Israelite figure named māshîaḥ (Messiah) in the Hebrew Bible (Isaiah 45:1).
Ahura Mazda & the Cosmic Triad · Ahura Mazda, Vohu Manah, Asha Vahishta, Khshathra Vairya

The Desirable Dominion — sovereignty as it should be, kingship as it ought to be, the rightly-exercised authority. The pattern of *power-as-Asha-in-social-arrangement*, not power as neutral or evil.
Earth, Waters, Plants, Royal-Waters · Spenta Armaiti, Haurvatat, Ameretat, Anahita
Spenta Armaiti
Holy Devotion — the Holy-Immortal of devoted-right-mindedness whose name simultaneously means "humility / devotion" AND "earth / soil / ground." The pattern of *the earth as embodied-devotion, the devotion as embodied-earth*.
Haurvatat
Wholeness — the Holy-Immortal of wholeness-health-integrity-completeness whose body IS the waters of the world. The pattern of *bodily-cosmic-moral wholeness as one phenomenon, embodied in every drop of clean water*.
Ameretat
Immortality — the Holy-Immortal of non-death whose body IS the plants of the earth. The pattern of *non-death as embodied in the plant-cycle that grows-dies-and-grows-again*, the canonical Indo-European immortality-concept preserved in its original-religious form.
Anahita (Aredvi Sura Anahita)
The Damp, the Strong, the Undefiled — the great water-goddess Yazata of the cosmic-river, fertility, royalty-investiture, and military-victory. The pattern of *the feminine-cosmic-river as the source of all life, royal-legitimacy, and victorious-action*.
Covenant, Obedience, Victory, Fire · Mithra, Sraosha, Verethragna, Atar
Mithra
The Covenant — the cosmic-guarantor of contracts, sworn-bonds, and friendship-pacts whose thousand ears and thousand eyes hear every oath and see every betrayal. The pattern of *the bond-keeping principle as the canonical-Yazata of social-cosmic-order*.
Sraosha
Obedience-as-Hearing — the Yazata of attentive-hearing-of-the-divine whose name etymologically means "to hear" and whose function is to carry every prayer to Ahura Mazda. The pattern of *obedience as active-hearing rather than submission-to-external-authority*.
Verethragna
The Smiter-of-Resistance — the canonical-Iranian war-god and victory-Yazata whose ten incarnations (wind, bull, horse, camel, boar, youth, raven, ram, goat, warrior) figure the multiplicity of forms that victory-over-Druj takes. The pattern of *active-smiting of every resistance to Asha*.
Atar
Fire — the canonical-Iranian fire-Yazata, son of Ahura Mazda, the personified-divine-flame of every Fire-Temple, every hearth, every ritual-altar. The pattern of *fire as the visible-symbol AND visible-substance of the divine-presence*.
