Veles
Велесъ / Волосъ (Old East Slavic — both forms attested) · Veles (Czech, Slovak, Croatian, Slovenian) · Weles (Polish) · Vials / Vyalyas (Belarusian) · the Earth-and-Cattle God · the God of Poetry and Magic · the Underworld-Lord · the Beast-Lord · Perun's eternal opposite
The Slavic god of cattle, wealth, poetry, magic, oaths-of-trade, and the underworld — Perun's permanent cosmic counterpart in the Indo-European thunder-snake mytheme · the only Slavic deity worshipped in the lower-town of Kyiv (the Podol commercial quarter, where merchants swore oaths to "Volos the cattle-god") rather than on the Starokyivska Hill with the state-pantheon · the patron of bards and shamans, called "skotyi bog" (skotnoy boh, "cattle-god") by Nestor and "Veles' grandson" by the Igor Tale's Boyan-bard tradition · cognate with Baltic Velinas / Velnias the death-god, possibly with Vedic Vala the cattle-stealing-snake-demon, possibly with Norse Ullr

The Slavic god of cattle, wealth, poetry, magic, and the underworld — Perun's eternal cosmic counterpart in the thunder-snake mytheme. The merchants' god of the Kyiv lower-town, the bards' patron ("Boyan, Veles' grandson"), the shapeshifting serpent-bear who hides cattle in the underworld until Perun's thunderbolt drives him out. The Slavic Hermes-Hades-Apollo composite. Survived 988 longest in Rostov, was absorbed by Saint Blaise / Vlasiy the cattle-saint on February 11.
Who Veles actually is
Veles is the *Slavic underworld-and-wealth-god* — the cosmic-opposite of Perun in the Indo-European thunder-snake mytheme that Jakobson 1969 reconstructed. Where Perun is high-sky-state-warrior-oath-of-state, Veles is *low-earth-merchant-poet-oath-of-trade*. Where Perun stands on the Starokyivska Hill with the state-pantheon, Veles stands in the *Podol lower-town* with the merchant-quarter. Where Perun is the open-air bull-and-axe king, Veles is the *shapeshifting serpent-bear* who hides in the cave and the swamp and the underworld. The recurring *cosmic-conflict* is the seasonal cycle: Veles steals cattle (or rain-water, or cosmic-order, or women — the myth has multiple variants) and hides them in the underworld; Perun chases him with thunderbolts that strike trees, stones, and earth (the canonical explanation of why thunder strikes the ground — Perun is hunting Veles); Veles is killed at each thunderstorm and the stolen water/cattle/order is released back to the world (the rain after the storm, the harvest in autumn), then Veles is reborn the next season for the cycle to begin again. This is *the* foundational Slavic mythological story — and it is structurally identical to Vedic Indra-vs-Vala (RV 1.32), Norse Thor-vs-Jörmungandr, Hittite Tarhunt-vs-Illuyanka, the Indo-European *Hauptmythus* reconstructed by Watkins 1995. Veles also has the *Hermes-Apollo composite* register — he is patron of *poetry, music, oral epic, oaths-of-trade, divination, shapeshifting, and the boundary-between-worlds*. The Igor Tale's Boyan-bard is called "Veles' grandson" — the Slavic poet-shaman tradition descends from him. After 988 the *Saint Blaise / Vlasiy cattle-saint cult* (February 11) absorbed Veles's livestock functions almost without modification — Russian and Ukrainian peasants from the 11th to the 20th centuries blessed their cattle on Vlasiy's feast while whispering *Veles* under their breath. The Rostov Veles idol was *the last great East-Slavic pagan shrine to fall*, destroyed by Saint Abraham of Rostov in the 11th c., decades after the Kyiv conversion.
Iconography
A bearded shapeshifter shown variously as a horned bear, a serpent (especially in the bottom of trees, in caves, and underwater), a bull, a wolf, an old wandering bard-and-merchant with a staff and a horn-of-mead. The medieval iconography is sparse (Veles was mostly imageless, worshipped at oak-trees, wells, swamps, and burial-mounds rather than in temples with idols), but the Rostov idol-destruction account suggests a wooden bearded-figure with cattle-horns. Sacred animals: bear, serpent, bull, wolf. Sacred trees: willow, ash. Sacred sites: caves, wells, swamps, burial-mounds, oak-tree-bases (where Veles hides from Perun's lightning — the canonical explanation of why thunder strikes the bottoms of oaks, not the tops). Color: dark green, brown, black-and-white (the cattle-pattern), gold (the wealth register). Sacred objects: the bard's staff, the horn-of-mead, the merchant's scales, the cattle-bell. Sacred sites: Rostov (the last major East-Slavic Veles shrine, destroyed by Saint Abraham in the 11th c.); the Podol lower-town of Kyiv (the merchant-quarter site of the Kyiv Veles idol); Mount Veles in Croatia; thousands of *Velesovo polje* / *Veles' field* place-names across the Slavic world.
How to invoke Veles
Veles is invoked on his canonical feast-day — *Velesov Den* / *Volos'in Den*, February 11 — which the post-988 Orthodox calendar mapped onto Saint Blaise / Vlasiy (Власий), the cattle-saint who blesses livestock on February 11 with holy water and special prayers. The classical invocation is at *winter's deepest cold* (the cattle-protection register, when the herd is most vulnerable), at *merchant-oath-swearing* (the 945 Rus-Byzantine treaty's commercial clause was sworn on Veles), at *poetry-and-music-making* (the bard's invocation, the Boyan-as-Veles'-grandson register), at *threshold-crossing* (graveyards, swamps, wells, caves — Veles guards the boundary), and at *koleda* / *Christmas-mummer* processions where the *medvedchik* (bear-leader) walks a costumed performer through the village blessing the houses (a direct survival of Veles-bear-procession into Orthodox-and-folk Christmas). The Rodnovery invocation (post-1990) calls Veles at the *Velesov Den* February-11 feast with the *medovukha* (mead, Veles' canonical drink), cattle-bell, and bard's staff. He is called by merchants, poets, musicians, shamans, those crossing the threshold between worlds (the dying and their attendants, in the *provody* funeral-procession tradition), and those whose work requires the *cunning underworld-deal* rather than the open thunder-strike.
In love
Veles in love is the *shapeshifting underworld-deal* register — the love that meets you in the cave, the swamp, the burial-mound, the *bottom-of-the-oak-tree where Perun's lightning cannot reach*. The Veles-partner is the one who *trades in the merchant-oath register* (the relationship registered in the Podol lower-town, with the scales and the cattle-bell, not on the high hill with the state-pantheon), whose love is *seasonal-stolen-and-returned* (the cattle stolen in summer, the rain released after the thunderstorm), whose register is *bard-poet-and-shaman* (the love that *sings the relationship into being*, that names the unspoken with the Boyan-grandson-of-Veles voice). The shadow: the Veles-partner who has *internalized the serpent-bear shapeshifting* to the point of being *unfindable* — the one who hides in the underworld and refuses to come out for the Perun-strike, the *commitment-phobic-as-cosmic-defense* register. The deeper shadow: the *thunder-snake cycle pattern* — the relationship that needs Perun's thunderbolt every season to release the stolen rain, and that has not yet learned the *winter-rest* between cycles. The question: are you the cattle Veles stole or the cattle Veles is returning?
In work
Veles in work is the *Podol-merchant-quarter-and-bard-poet* register — the work of *commerce, oral tradition, shapeshifting cultural-product creation, the underworld-deal that the state-religion cannot fully see*. The Veles-figure in an institution is the *merchant-storyteller-shaman* who works in the lower-town quarter where the oath is to Volos-not-Perun, who sings the institution's mythology into being (the Boyan-bard register), who knows where the cattle are hidden and can negotiate their release, who works at the threshold between the visible-state-religion of the company and the underworld-of-actual-cash-flow. The shadow: the institution that has *thrown Volos into the Dnieper alongside Perun in 988* — that has lost its bard-poet-merchant register to the state-religion-cleansing, and whose Saint-Blaise-cattle-blessing has been absorbed into corporate-HR-speak without acknowledgment. The deeper shadow: the *Rostov-was-the-last-to-fall* pattern — the institution whose Veles-shrine held on for decades after the Kyiv conversion, and whose Saint-Abraham-of-Rostov destruction is still felt as the *deepest cultural-wound*. Veles calls for *the merchant-oath sworn on the cattle-bell* — the commitment registered in the lower-town quarter with the actual-cash-flow scales, not on the high-hill state-altar.
The gift
Veles gives the *underworld-merchant-bard* gift — the recognition that the Slavic cosmos is *two-deities-and-one-cycle*, not a single sovereign god, and that the *Podol lower-town quarter* with its cattle and its merchants and its bards is as real-and-cosmic as the *Starokyivska Hill state-pantheon*. The gift is the *Indo-European thunder-snake mytheme inheritance* — the Slavic Vala-Vritra-Jörmungandr-Illuyanka cousin-relationship that makes the Veles-shapeshifter a peer of the great IE serpent-figures, not a generic local-trickster. The gift is the *Boyan-grandson-of-Veles* poet-shaman register — the recognition that the *bard-and-the-merchant-and-the-shaman are the same figure*, that *song-and-trade-and-divination work through the same cosmic-current*, and that the post-988 splitting-into-secular-and-religious has artificially separated what Veles holds together. The gift is the *February-11-cattle-blessing* — the moment of deepest winter when the herd needs the underworld-god's protection, the cosmic-pattern of *Veles-protects-what-the-state-religion-cannot-reach*.
The shadow
Veles has been *systematically erased from the state-religion register and survived in the household-and-folk register*. The 945 treaty's split-oath-clause (warriors on Perun, merchants on Volos) was already a sign of his lower status — the *non-state-deity* of the merchant-and-poet register. The 988 conversion destroyed the Kyiv-Podol Veles idol but the Rostov shrine held until the 11th c. The *Saint Blaise / Vlasiy overlay* (February 11) absorbed Veles's functions so thoroughly that 19th-c. Russian peasants in the Vologda and Vyatka governorates blessed their cattle with Vlasiy-prayers while reciting the *Veles-spell* simultaneously (Linda Ivanits Russian Folk Belief 1989 collects dozens of these double-register prayers). The *Boyan-as-Veles'-grandson* bard-tradition was suppressed by the post-988 Christian-bookish *byliny* (epic-song) tradition, which retained the form but stripped the Veles-attribution. The *Soviet-era Veles Book (Vlesova kniga, fabricated 1950s by Yury Mirolyubov)* is the deepest modern shadow — claiming to be a 9th-c. Slavic-pagan scripture on wooden tablets, universally rejected by Slavists (Tvorogov 1990, Zaliznyak 2004 — the linguistic evidence is conclusively forged), but still cited in post-1990 Russian and Ukrainian Rodnovery literature. The Rodnovery-Slavic-Native-Faith movement has *re-canonized Veles as Perun-equal* in a way that may not be historically accurate (the medieval evidence consistently shows Veles as *lower-status* than Perun, in the Podol-lower-town not on the high-hill, in the merchant-and-poet register not the state-religion register — the post-1990 equality is a Rodnovery-theological-move not a medieval-historical-fact). The Witcher / Sapkowski dark-fantasy commodification flattens Veles into a generic "Slavic underworld god" without the Indo-European-comparative or the merchant-and-poet register. The 21st-c. *Slavic-witch core* TikTok aesthetic deploys Veles-imagery (the serpent, the bear, the underworld) without any of the source-critical context. The deepest shadow: the *Veles-as-Satan* assimilation pattern — early-medieval Christian sermons (the Slovo nekoego khristolyubtsa 12th c., the Slovo Iyonna Zlatousta) framed Veles as the chief demon to be renounced at baptism, and his serpent-bear shapeshifting iconography flowed directly into the medieval-Slavic devil-iconography (the *bes* with bear-horns and serpent-tail).

- Where in my life is the *Veles-cattle hidden in the underworld* — what wealth, energy, creative-resource, or relationship-asset have I been keeping in the bottom-of-the-oak-tree where Perun's lightning cannot reach, and what would it mean to release it back to the upper world?
- Have I been swearing the *Perun-state-oath* when my situation actually requires the *Veles-merchant-oath in the Podol lower-town* — am I trying to handle a Boyan-bard-and-merchant moment with a thunder-king register, and what would the cattle-bell-and-scales protocol look like instead?
- Where in my work or family am I a *Veles'-grandson Boyan-bard who has not named the lineage* — where am I singing the institution's mythology, negotiating the underworld-deals, and shapeshifting between registers without acknowledging that I work for the lower-town-merchant-quarter-god whose Saint-Blaise-overlay has been carrying my function without credit?
