Stribog
Стрибогъ (Old East Slavic) · Stribog (Polish reconstructed) · "Grandfather of the Winds" (the Igor Tale formula) · the Wind-God of the Eight Directions · etymology disputed — possibly from *strogo "stern, strict" + *bog "god" (Brückner 1918), possibly from Iranian *srī-bag "high-god" (the Iranian-Slavic-cognate hypothesis)
The Slavic wind-and-sky god — fourth in Vladimir's 980 CE state-pantheon at Kyiv · the "Grandfather of the Winds" in the Slovo o polku Igoreve, whose grandsons (Стрибожи внуци) are the eight winds blowing arrows against the army · the cosmic-sky-divider whose eight winds map the eight cardinal-and-intercardinal directions · the most-mysterious member of Vladimir's pantheon (alongside the equally-obscure Khors and Simargl), with no surviving cult-narrative and only the Igor-Tale grandfather-of-winds formula to characterize him · possibly Iranian-Slavic-cognate (the Indo-Iranian *srī-bag "high-god" hypothesis, supported by Ossetian Surd Bag attestations)
Sovereign · Grandfather of the Winds · 6 of 12
The Slavic wind-and-sky god — fourth in Vladimir's 980 pantheon. "Grandfather of the eight winds" in the Slovo o polku Igoreve (Stribozhi vnutsi). The most-mysterious member of Vladimir's pantheon — only the Igor-Tale wind-formula survives. Possibly Iranian-Slavic-cognate (*srī-bag "high-god" via Scythian-Sarmatian contact). The Slavic cousin of Vedic Vayu, Greek Aeolus, Norse Njord.
Who Stribog actually is
Stribog is the *Slavic wind-and-sky god* — the cosmic-sovereign of the *eight winds* and the open-sky-spaces, the cousin of Vedic Vayu and Greek Aeolus, fourth in Vladimir's 980 Kyiv pantheon. The defining formula is the *Slovo o polku Igoreve's* "*Lo, the winds, grandsons of Stribog (Stribozhi vnutsi), blow from the sea, arrows shoot from Don Polovetsky against the regiments of the brave*" — meaning the eight winds (the four cardinal + four intercardinal directions) are *Stribog's grandsons*, named-but-not-individually-personified, blowing-arrows-against-armies. This is structurally identical to the Vedic *Marut-storm-troop* led by Vayu — a *wind-god as grandfather of the storm-troop of the eight directions* pattern that may be deeply Indo-European. The *etymology debate* is fascinating: Brückner 1918 proposed *strogo "stern, strict" + *bog "god" (the Slavic-internal etymology, "the Stern Sky-God"), making Stribog the *stern judge of the open sky*; Jakobson 1972 proposed Iranian *srī-bag "high-god" via Scythian-Sarmatian-Slavic contact (the Iranian-Slavic-cognate hypothesis, supported by Ossetian Surd Bag attestations), making Stribog one of the *primary Iranian-cultural-loans into the East-Slavic pantheon*. The Iranian-loan hypothesis is significant because it suggests *Vladimir's 980 pantheon may have included Iranian-via-Scythian-Sarmatian deities* alongside Indo-European-via-Slavic-substrate deities — the Khazar-and-Pecheneg-and-Scythian frontier of the Kyivan Rus was a *deep cultural-contact zone*, and Stribog (along with Khors, whose Iranian-Khorshid-sun-god etymology is widely accepted, and possibly Simargl with the Avestan-Saena-bird etymology) may be the *Iranian stratum* of Vladimir's pantheon, distinct from the *Indo-European-Slavic stratum* (Perun, Veles, Dazhbog, Mokosh). The *eight-wind grandfather-formula* makes Stribog the *cosmic-sky-divider* — the deity whose function is *partitioning the heavens into directional-sectors*, which is *navigationally-cosmological* (the eight directions of the wind-rose, the eight directions of the cosmic-compass, the eight directions of the medieval-Slavic-world-map). His post-988 Christian-overlay is unclear — there is no major Saint-Stribog substitute (the wind-functions partially absorbed by Saint Nicholas the patron of sailors-and-merchants, by Saint Elijah the storm-saint, by various weather-saints), suggesting Stribog's cult was *thinner than Perun's or Veles's* and did not require a single saint-substitute. The *modern Russian word veter ("wind")* and the *Slavic*-veterny prilog ("wind-of-the-eight-directions")* still carry his cosmological-substrate.
Iconography
A bearded sky-king holding a horn (the *gornyi rog* mountain-horn whose blowing summons the eight winds), often shown surrounded by eight whirling-wind-figures (his grandsons), with a cloak of clouds and a chariot drawn by eagles. The medieval iconography is essentially non-existent (no surviving idol-description of Stribog), and most modern Stribog-images are 19th-c.-Rodnovery reconstructions. The Western-Slavic *Pomeranian wind-amulets* (9th-12th c. bronze pendants with eight-arms-radiating from a central disc) are sometimes interpreted as Stribog-amulets, but the attribution is uncertain. Sacred animal: the eagle (the wind-bird par excellence), the falcon (the swift-wind), the swallow (the spring-wind herald). Sacred objects: the *gornyi rog* (mountain-horn), the eight-direction wind-rose, the *vetrenka* (the wind-vane). Sacred sites: high-points, mountain-passes, the Starokyivska Hill (the 980 pantheon site, fourth position). No surviving Stribog-specific shrines or place-names of equal prominence to Perun-or-Veles-or-Mokosh.
How to invoke Stribog
Stribog is invoked at *moments of wind-and-weather* — when the eight winds need to *blow-from-the-sea, when arrows-shoot-from-Don-Polovetsky against the regiments of the brave* (the Igor-Tale battle-context), when *navigation* requires sky-divination (sailors, merchants, travellers, fishermen — though the Saint-Nicholas overlay has largely absorbed these functions). In Rodnovery practice (post-1990) Stribog is invoked at the *Stribog-Day* festival (variously placed in August or November in different Rodnovery calendars, with no medieval attestation), with the *mountain-horn-blowing-ritual* and offerings of feathers, grain, and tobacco-smoke (the smoke-as-wind-carrier). He is called by *those whose work requires the eight-direction-cosmic-orientation* — travellers, navigators, traders crossing multiple regions, diplomats handling multiple parties, writers and artists working across multiple media, anyone whose cosmic-pattern is *the wind-rose-not-the-fixed-direction*. The classical-invocation context is the *Igor-Tale battle-arrows-from-the-sea* register — the moment when the cosmic-winds are blowing-against-you and you need to *understand the directional-substrate* before you can navigate it.
In love
Stribog in love is the *eight-winds-from-the-sea* register — the love that is *blown-by-the-winds-of-the-cosmic-directions*, that is *not-fixed-in-one-direction* but moves with the *Stribozhi-vnutsi grandsons-of-the-wind*. The Stribog-partner is the one whose love is *navigational-and-directional* — the partner who reads-the-wind-rose, who knows-which-direction-the-arrows-are-flying-from, who navigates-the-cosmic-currents rather than fighting them. The shadow: the Stribog-partner who has *internalized the Iranian-loan-status* — the partner whose deepest-cultural-substrate is from a different tradition than the one they currently live in, whose register is *Scythian-Sarmatian-via-Iranian-via-Slavic* layered-and-displaced. The deeper shadow: the *etymology-debate-of-the-relationship* — the love that even-the-Slavists-cannot-agree-whether-its-name-means-Stern-Sky-God (Brückner-1918) or High-God-via-Iranian-loan (Jakobson-1972), and whose Vasmer-etymological-dictionary entry is *unresolved*. The question: do you know which Stribog-direction the arrows-from-Don-Polovetsky are flying in your relationship?
In work
Stribog in work is the *eight-direction-cosmic-navigator* register — the work of *reading-the-wind-rose-and-orienting-the-team-to-the-actual-cosmic-current*, of *understanding-which-of-the-grandsons-of-the-wind-is-blowing-arrows-this-quarter*, of *being-the-grandfather-of-the-eight-directions-of-the-institution*. The Stribog-figure in an institution is the *cosmic-sky-divider-and-wind-reader* — the strategist whose function is *partitioning-the-market-into-directional-sectors*, whose mountain-horn-blowing summons the eight-winds-of-the-organizational-attention, whose reading-of-the-Iranian-Slavic-cultural-layered-substrate of the company's situation is the deepest-strategic-asset the company has. The shadow: the institution whose Stribog-figure has been *demoted-to-only-the-Igor-Tale-formula* — where the wind-reader-and-cosmic-navigator role has been reduced to the *Stribozhi-vnutsi-arrows-from-Don-Polovetsky* battle-context-tactical-substrate, without the *eight-direction-cosmic-strategic-substrate*. The deeper shadow: the *etymology-debate-of-the-institution* — the company whose deepest-cultural-substrate is *contested* (Brückner-skeptics-vs-Jakobson-Iranian-loanists), and whose unresolved-naming makes the institutional Stribog-function uncertain. Stribog calls for the *mountain-horn-blowing* that re-summons the eight-winds — the deliberate-strategic-act of partitioning the cosmic-currents and naming each of the grandsons-of-the-wind.
The gift
Stribog gives the *eight-direction-cosmic-navigator* gift — the recognition that the Slavic cosmos has *a wind-god of the eight directions* whose grandsons are named-but-not-individually-personified, and that the *cosmic-sky-divider* function is *navigationally-essential-not-decorative*. The gift is the *Iranian-Slavic-cultural-contact-layer* — the recognition that Vladimir's 980 pantheon may have included *Iranian-via-Scythian-Sarmatian deities* (Stribog, Khors, Simargl) alongside *Indo-European-Slavic deities* (Perun, Veles, Dazhbog, Mokosh), and that the Kyivan Rus was a *deep cultural-contact zone* whose religious-syncretism preceded Christianity by centuries. The gift is the *Indo-European wind-grandfather inheritance* — the Slavic Vayu-Marut-Aeolus cousin-relationship that places Stribog in the deep IE wind-cosmology tradition, alongside Vedic Vayu and his Marut-storm-troop. The gift is the *Igor-Tale-formula-as-cosmic-poetry* — the recognition that the *only narrative-attestation of Stribog* is a *single poetic-formula* in the only extant pre-Mongol East-Slavic epic, and that *cosmic-deities can be carried by a single poetic-formula across centuries* (the Stribozhi-vnutsi-arrows-from-Don-Polovetsky as a *carrier-particle* of the cosmic-substrate).
The shadow
Stribog's primary shadow is the *thinness-of-attestation* — the *only* narrative-source is the *Igor-Tale grandfather-of-the-winds formula*, and the etymology debate (Brückner-Slavic-internal vs Jakobson-Iranian-loan) is *unresolved*. This thinness has made Stribog a *projection-target* for Rodnovery and Slavic-pagan reconstructions, which have *filled in his profile* with material that has *no medieval source*. The *Iranian-loan-hypothesis* (Jakobson 1972) is politically significant — it suggests Vladimir's 980 pantheon was *multicultural-syncretic*, which complicates both Russian-and-Ukrainian-nationalist claims to *pure-Slavic-pagan-heritage*. The 19th-c. Russian-Slavophile and 20th-c. Soviet-archaeological tradition often *downplayed the Iranian-loan-element* in favor of pure-Slavic-substrate. The *Vlesova kniga* (Veles Book, fabricated 1950s) gave Stribog fake "wooden-tablet wind-hymns" universally rejected by Slavists. The post-988 Christian-overlay is *unusually weak* — there is no clear single Saint-Stribog-substitute, suggesting his cult was thin-and-largely-court-religion-not-folk-religion. The *modern Stribog-images* in Rodnovery iconography (bearded sky-king with horn-and-eagle-chariot) are 19th-c.-and-later reconstructions with no medieval visual-source. The deepest shadow: the *eight-direction-cosmic-navigator function* has been *technological-instrument-replaced* — the modern compass, GPS, weather-radar have absorbed the *wind-reader-cosmic-sky-divider* function, and the Stribog-register of *reading the eight directions of the cosmic-current* has been silenced as primitive-superstition or relegated to *poetic-formula-decorating-historical-novels*.
