Mama Killa (Mama Quilla)

Mama Killa · "Mother Moon" · wife of Inti · mother of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo · "Mama Quilla" in the Spanish-orthographic transliteration · the lunar-feminine of the Inca state-cult, whose silver-tear iconography parallels Inti's gold-sweat

Cosmic Sovereign · 3 of 12

The Andean Moon-goddess whose tears are silver, sovereign of the lunar-calendar that organized all Inca timing. The pattern of the *lunar-feminine-co-sovereign* — wife of the Sun-king, mother of the dynasty, whose monthly-cycle is the rhythm of agricultural and ritual life.

The Inca Moon-goddess — wife of Inti, mother of the founding-Inca Manco Capac and his sister-wife Mama Ocllo, sovereign of the lunar-calendar that organized all Inca agricultural and ritual timing. Silver was called *the tears of Mama Killa* (paralleling gold as Inti's sweat) and was reserved for the *Coya* (queen), the Aclla-cuna (the chosen-women cloistered in the Aclla Wasi), and the lunar-temples. Her eclipse was the most-feared astronomical event in the Inca calendar — Inca priests would beat drums, light fires, and tie dogs to make them howl, all to scare away the cosmic-puma believed to be devouring her. The 16-September Killa Raymi festival celebrated the spring-equinox under her lunar-feminine sovereignty.

What Mama Killa (Mama Quilla) actually means

Mama Killa is the *Andean archetype of the lunar-feminine-as-co-sovereign* — not subordinate to the Sun-king but his structural-equal, with her own jurisdiction (the lunar-calendar, the agricultural-cycle, the female-cloister of the Aclla-cuna, the silver-trade) parallel to his (the solar-calendar, the imperial-army, the male-priesthood, the gold-trade). The Inca state was *not patriarchal in the post-conquest Spanish sense*; it was *gender-parallel*, with each gender having its own ritual-economic-political domain. The Coya was not the Sapa Inca's wife in the European-queen-consort sense; she was the lunar-sovereign whose ritual-calendar ran parallel to his solar one. Silver-as-the-tears-of-Mama-Killa was material-theology of the same depth as gold-as-the-sweat-of-Inti — *silver is solidified-moonlight*, the deity's material-trace. The Aclla Wasi ("House of the Chosen Women") was the lunar-cloister: young women selected at age 8-10 for their ritual-purity, trained in weaving, chicha-brewing, and lunar-ritual, and assigned to the temples of Mama Killa, the Coricancha (where they served Inti), or to the harems of senior nobles. The Aclla-cuna were not slaves; they were a priestly-economic class with their own ritual-authority. Her eclipse — the *Killa unkuy* ("the moon's being-eaten") — was treated as the cosmic-puma attempting to devour her, and required emergency-ritual-intervention to scare the puma away (drums, fires, howling-dogs).

The canonical story

Mama Killa was the wife of Inti from the beginning of the dynasty. She bore him Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, the founding-Inca and his sister-wife. Some Inca-genealogical-traditions also placed her as a daughter of Mama Cocha (the Sea-mother) — making her a creature both of the heavens and of the deep, the lunar-tidal-pull made personal. Her primary temple was on the Isla de la Luna in Lake Titicaca (sister-island to the Isla del Sol, which was Inti's primary temple — the two islands forming the cosmogonic-pair at the lake from which the dynasty was born). Her secondary temple was within the Coricancha at Cuzco, in a chamber adjacent to Inti's — the two chambers sun-and-moon-aligned at the cardinal directions. The lunar-calendar she governed organized the Inca agricultural year: the planting of maize at the heliacal-rising of the Pleiades (Qollqa) in May, the harvest in March-April, the chicha-brewing for Inti Raymi in May, the renewal-ceremonies at each new-moon and full-moon. Her eclipse-rituals were performed during every lunar-eclipse: drums beaten, fires lit, dogs tied and beaten to make them howl, llamas sacrificed — all to scare away the cosmic-puma. The Spanish chroniclers (Cobo 1653, Cieza de León 1553) recorded the eclipse-ritual in detail; it survived in highland Quechua villages into the 20th c.

The lesson

The Mama Killa-lesson is *the lunar-feminine is the co-sovereign, not the subordinate; her calendar is structurally-equal to the solar one, her material (silver) is structurally-equal to gold, her jurisdiction (agriculture, weaving, chicha, the female-cloister) is structurally-equal to his*. The post-conquest Spanish system flattened the gender-parallel Inca structure into a patriarchal-European structure, demoting the Coya to "queen-consort" and the Aclla-cuna to "nuns" (the *Convento de las Vírgenes del Sol* was the Spanish remodeling of the Aclla Wasi). The work is to *recover the gender-parallel structure* — see that the lunar-jurisdiction is not subordinate, see that the silver-tears are not lesser than the gold-sweat, see that the monthly-cycle is structurally-equal to the annual-cycle.

In love

Mama Killa in love is the partner whose *lunar-jurisdiction is structurally-equal to the solar-jurisdiction of the household* — whose monthly-cycle, agricultural-timing, female-cloister, silver-economy is not subordinate to the sun-king's annual-cycle, imperial-army, male-priesthood, gold-economy. The shadow: the Mama-Killa-partner whose *eclipse is being treated as a private-illness* rather than as a cosmic-event requiring emergency-ritual-intervention — when her moon is being devoured by the cosmic-puma, the household should be beating drums and lighting fires, not asking her to medicate. The deeper shadow: the *Aclla-Wasi-remodeled-into-Convento* pattern — the female-cloister of independent ritual-authority that has been Spanish-Catholicized into a "convent of nuns" with the underlying authority erased.

In work

Mama Killa in work is the *co-sovereign-founder* — the founder whose lunar-jurisdiction (the relational, the ritual-timing, the female-cloister, the silver-trade) is the structural-equal of the solar-jurisdiction-founder (the operational, the army, the gold-trade). The shadow: the Mama-Killa-founder whose silver-tears have been treated as "soft skills" or "interpersonal" rather than as material-theology of the same depth as gold-sweat. The deeper shadow: the *eclipse-treated-as-personal-crisis* pattern — when the lunar-founder is in eclipse, the team treats it as personal-burnout instead of as a cosmic-event requiring all-hands ritual-intervention (drums, fires, howling-dogs). The application: Mama Killa calls for the *gender-parallel jurisdictions* discipline — name the lunar-jurisdiction explicitly, recognize the silver-economy as equal to the gold-economy, perform the eclipse-ritual when she is being eaten.

The shadow — honest about modern misreadings

Mama Killa has been *systematically subordinated* in colonial and post-colonial Andean religious-history. The Spanish chroniclers, working within Catholic gender-hierarchies, recorded her as "wife of Inti" rather than as co-sovereign — flattening the gender-parallel structure into a patriarchal one. The Aclla-Wasi was Catholicized into the *Convento de las Vírgenes del Sol* (Convent of the Sun Virgins) in the 1530s-1540s, with the Aclla-cuna reclassified as "nuns under Catholic supervision"; many of the original Aclla-cuna chose to die rather than convert. The silver of the Potosí mine (1545+) was extracted on the back of the *mit'a forzado* — the forced-labor system under which highland-Quechua-and-Aymara men were conscripted to mine silver in conditions that killed ~8 million between 1545 and 1825 — and the silver was shipped to Spain as the funding-source of the Habsburg empire and the European 16th-c. inflation. This is *Mama Killa's tears extracted from Pachamama's body at the cost of 8 million indigenous lives*. The contemporary lithium-and-silver mining of the *altiplano* continues the extraction. The 20th-c. feminist-spirituality movement has rediscovered some of the lunar-feminine register but rarely with attribution to the canonical Andean source. The Disney-Emperor's-New-Groove and similar commodifications strip the Coya-and-Aclla-cuna structure entirely.

3 key questions Mama Killa (Mama Quilla) asks of you

  1. Where is my *lunar-jurisdiction being subordinated* — the monthly-cycle, the relational, the silver-economy, the female-cloister — to a solar-jurisdiction that is structurally-equal-not-superior, and what does restoring the gender-parallel structure look like?
  2. Has my *Aclla-Wasi been remodeled into a Convento* — the independent ritual-authority of my female-or-lunar-side Catholicized into "soft skills" or "interpersonal" — and is it time to name back the underlying authority that was erased?
  3. When my *moon is in eclipse*, does my household / team beat drums and light fires and call all-hands, or does it treat the eclipse as a personal-crisis to be medicated privately — and what would the cosmic-ritual response look like in practice?
