The northern-Andean twin-thunder-oracle whose stone-image was executed by Atahualpa with a hammer-blow because it had foretold his defeat. The pattern of *the prophet-killed-by-the-king-it-foretold-the-fall-of*, the canonical Andean shooting-the-messenger.

The northern-Andean twin-thunder-oracle-god of Huamachuco — the regional-Apu whose oracle was the most-feared of the northern-Andean cult-system. Twin-brother of Piguerao, son of the woman Cautaguan who was killed at his birth by the twin sons of Guamansuri. Catequil's canonical stone-image at Huamachuco was so feared that the Sapa Inca Atahualpa (returning from Cajamarca to Cuzco after his defeat-and-capture by Pizarro in November 1532, in the dying-days of the Inca empire) detoured specifically to Huamachuco, where he personally executed the stone-image with a hammer-blow — because the oracle had predicted the defeat that had just-now-arrived-from-the-Spanish. Catequil is the canonical Andean *oracle-deity-executed-by-the-king-it-foretold-defeat-of*. The Huamachuco-cult survived in fragmentary form into the colonial period and was recorded by the Spanish chroniclers (Cieza de León, Augustín de Zárate, the *Relación de Augustinos de Huamachuco* 1560).

What Catequil (Apocatequil) actually means

Catequil is the *Andean archetype of the prophet-executed-by-the-king-whose-fall-it-foretold* — the twin-thunder-oracle of Huamachuco whose canonical-cult-image was destroyed in November 1532 by the Sapa Inca Atahualpa himself, in the dying-weeks of the Inca empire, because the oracle had foretold Atahualpa's defeat. The story is canonical: Atahualpa, after his capture at Cajamarca by Pizarro in November 1532 and during the period when he was a hostage-being-ransomed (the famous *ransom-room* full of gold, paid out by his royal-household over the months before his execution in July 1533), was permitted by the Spanish to consult oracles. He sent envoys to Pachacamac (who reportedly gave an evasive-answer) and to Catequil at Huamachuco (who reportedly gave a clear-and-terrible answer: Atahualpa would not survive). Atahualpa, in rage at the oracle, personally detoured to Huamachuco on a journey under Spanish-escort, located the stone-image of Catequil in its shrine, and *executed it* — striking it with a hammer-blow, smashing the stone-image, killing the deity. This is the canonical Andean *shooting-the-messenger*. The execution of the oracle did not prevent the prophecy: Atahualpa was strangled at Cajamarca in July 1533 by order of Pizarro. Catequil-as-twin-of-Piguerao maps onto the canonical Andean twin-thunder-cosmology (Illapa was sometimes characterized as triadic, and other Andean regions had twin-thunder-deities); the *Apus-thunder-and-twin* cluster is a recognizable Andean-regional-variation. The Huamachuco cult-system was the central-religious-center of the northern-Andean Tallán-and-Cajamarca polities before-and-during the Inca conquest.

The canonical story

In the canonical Huamachuco origin-narrative recorded by the Augustinian friars in 1560: a primordial-couple, Apocatequil-and-Guamansuri, had twin sons, who killed the woman Cautaguan who was pregnant with the canonical-twin-thunder-deities. At the moment of Cautaguan's death, she gave birth to the twins Catequil and Piguerao, who emerged from her corpse fully-formed and immediately began their cosmic-work. Catequil became the dominant-twin, the oracular-thunder-Apu of Huamachuco; Piguerao the lesser-twin. Catequil's canonical-petition was for *thunder-and-victory* — the warriors of the northern-Andes consulted him before battle, and the oracle was famous for the accuracy and severity of its readings. When the Inca Tupac Yupanqui conquered the northern-Andes (c. 1470-1480), he incorporated Catequil into the Inca state-pantheon as a regional-Apu, alongside Pachacamac (the coastal-pantheon-incorporation) and the other regional-deities. Catequil retained his cult-site at Huamachuco. In November 1532, Atahualpa — recently-captured by Pizarro and held at Cajamarca pending ransom — sent envoys to Catequil for an oracle. Catequil predicted defeat. Atahualpa, in rage and despair, personally executed the stone-image with a hammer-blow. He was strangled at Cajamarca in July 1533. The Spanish in the 1540s-1560s suppressed the Huamachuco-cult; the Augustinian friars in 1560 wrote the *Relación de Augustinos de Huamachuco* recording the cult's structure as part of the canonical extirpation-of-idolatries documentation. The cult survived in fragmentary form in highland-Huamachuco-Cajabamba communities.

The lesson

The Catequil-lesson is *the oracle-that-predicts-your-defeat is not your enemy; executing-it does not prevent the prophecy; the appropriate-response is petition-for-modification-or-acceptance-not-destruction*. The canonical Andean shooting-the-messenger story is Atahualpa-at-Catequil, and its lesson is universal: the *executing the prophet* never prevents the *fall the prophet foretold*; it only adds the *blood-of-the-prophet* to the fall. The work is to *not be Atahualpa-at-Catequil* in your own life — when an oracle (a person, a metric, a piece of feedback, a vision) tells you a hard-truth-about-imminent-fall, do not destroy the oracle; petition the deity for modification, or accept the fall with as much dignity as Atahualpa-himself-eventually-did at the moment of strangulation.

In love

Catequil in love is the *oracle-in-the-relationship that has foretold a hard-truth-about-imminent-fall* — the partner-or-friend or therapy-session or piece-of-honest-feedback that has named what is coming. The shadow: the *Atahualpa-response* — executing the oracle (cutting-off the friend, ending the therapy, dismissing the feedback) with a hammer-blow because the prophecy is too-hard-to-bear, and discovering that the execution did not prevent the prophecy. The deeper shadow: the *twin-not-named* pattern — Catequil-and-Piguerao are twins, and the dominant-oracle has a lesser-twin who carries part of the same prophecy, and executing-only-the-dominant-twin does not silence the prophecy carried by the lesser-twin who has been overlooked.

In work

Catequil in work is the *oracle-in-the-institution that has foretold imminent-defeat* — the senior-engineer who said "this architecture will fail," the CFO who said "this burn-rate is unsustainable," the customer-survey that said "you have lost product-market-fit," the friend-on-the-board who said "your co-founder is going to leave." The shadow: the *Atahualpa-response* — executing the oracle (firing the engineer, ignoring the CFO, dismissing the survey, asking the board-friend to step down) with a hammer-blow, and discovering that the execution did not prevent the prophecy. The deeper shadow: the *twin-not-named* pattern — the dominant-oracle has been silenced but a lesser-twin oracle (a junior-engineer carrying the same architectural-concern, a quieter board-member carrying the same warning) is still-present and still-carries the prophecy, and the execution-of-the-dominant-twin has only delayed the recognition. The application: Catequil calls for the *honor-the-oracle* discipline — when the prophecy is hard, petition the deity for modification or accept the fall with dignity, but do not execute the messenger.

The shadow — honest about modern misreadings

Catequil has been *under-recovered* in mainstream Andean-religion-scholarship because his cult-region (Huamachuco-Cajamarca, northern-highlands of contemporary Peru) is less-tourist-visited than Cuzco-Machu-Picchu-Lake-Titicaca. The Augustinian *Relación de Augustinos de Huamachuco* (1560) is a primary-source rarely cited outside specialist-literature. The contemporary Cajamarca highland-region is the site of the largest-ongoing Apu-cult-vs-extractivism conflict in Peru — the *Conga* gold-and-copper project of Yanacocha (which would destroy four lagoons sacred to local-Apus) was halted by the 2011-2012 protests and has been in suspended-conflict since. The Atahualpa-Catequil execution-of-the-oracle story is *not commonly taught* in Peruvian-school curricula or in popular Inca-history works (which focus on the Pizarro-vs-Atahualpa narrative without the Catequil-detour). The contemporary recovery: John Topic's extensive archaeological-work at Huamachuco since the 1980s, the 2013+ archaeological-park-development at the Catequil-shrine-site of Cerro Icchal. The Disney-Emperor's-New-Groove (2000) has no Catequil. The contemporary corporate-leadership-literature's "kill the messenger" cliché-warning is the canonical-but-deracinated post-Catequil moral, taught without any reference to the Andean-source-narrative.

3 key questions Catequil (Apocatequil) asks of you

  1. Which *oracle in my life has foretold a hard-truth-about-imminent-fall* — and am I considering the Atahualpa-response (executing the messenger with a hammer-blow), or am I prepared to petition-for-modification or accept-the-fall with dignity?
  2. Have I already *executed an oracle* and discovered the prophecy is still-arriving — and is there a lesser-twin (Piguerao) still-present, still-carrying the same warning, who I should now honor rather than overlook?
  3. Where am I being asked to *be the Catequil-oracle* myself — to deliver a hard-truth-about-imminent-fall to a king whose first response will be to reach for the hammer — and what does delivering-the-prophecy-with-the-Catequil-dignity look like, even knowing the cost?
